Introspection

This is a painting I made for my AP 2D Design class in high school.  My AP portfolio was about using the influences of other artists to inspire my work, I did this through painting subjects related to me and my life, in the style and mediums of other artists.

01

Inspiration and sketch

I was inspired by the figures in Leonora Carrington's work The Feast of Samhai  which I based this sketch on.  I decided to use the surrealist aspect of her art to make my painting into a mirror rather than an image to look at. This mirror encompassed a self portrait of me

The Frame

I created the frame from cardboard and modeling paste. I based my design off a dining room set my family used to have, which was very intricate. Though, after finishing it the first time, my dog ended up eating part of the frame, which allowed me to iterate and make my previous design better.

03

Painting!

I started of by creating a graphite transfer to get my design onto the canvas. I then used an acrylic wash and oil paint for the background while taping off my sketch, I then painted the main figure with oil paints.

Finished product

Introspection is a piece I will always be proud of. I put my everything into trying a new style and medium and it worked out in my favor. This piece reminds me that you can make something beautiful out of bad feelings, and taking risks can be worth it.
